All the Seats I’m Thinking About This Week

May 27, 2023

By Zoë Sessums

Welcome to the extended version of my weekly newsletter, House Call (and if you haven’t subscribed, what are you waiting for?) This is where I spend some time pondering a theme, answering a question, and helping you shop smarter—or at least find some new inspiration. Reach out if you ever need recommendations. I’m happy to search the internet for the most specific furnishings, decor, and knickknacks.

If ever there’s a time to gab about chairs, sofas, and the like, it’s during Clever’s annual Seat Week.

Last summer I lamented the fact that I have too many chairs in my house. I attempted to come up with a rule that would declare there must be a one-in, one-out policy, but for every ill-fitting or not-quite-right sofa I parted with, I still found myself with more incredible pieces of seating than there is room for. From a pair of marbled orange and yellow Milo Baughman chairs to a pink and coral plaid sofa bed, the places to sit just keep growing—and perhaps getting more fabulous. And the outcome is always the same: Rather than berate myself for these accumulations, I figured I should just celebrate them. After sitting on so many chairs, and reading about so many iconic and newfangled designs, here’s a further celebration of seats I’m loving and coveting.

I searched for a sofa bed for a year before I found one I loved, which happened to be this bright and beautiful plaid number. Although it’s a tease to show you my one-of-a-kind find, the resource (Kaiyo) is a worthy share. The online marketplace for pre-owned furniture is not only a great place for finding amazing deals on vintage or like-new sofas and chairs (and everything else), but Kaiyo is also committed to making furniture buying more sustainable. Wins all around, especially when you find a gem like this sleeper sofa.

I am forever in search of smaller, compact sofas, so when I saw this Eames option that is upholstered in a previously-discontinued colorway of Jacob’s Coat by Alexander Girard, it stuck right in my brain. This is from the Herman Miller x Hay collab that has us all salivating.

A few months ago, I found these incredible Milo Baughman chairs that I learned were once part of some 7- to 12-piece modular sectional. Covered in a marbled swirl fabric, almost appearing to be tie dyed, the set of chairs were too absurd to pass by. Even though these are not the exact chairs, they have a bold presence, and would look equally great with the plaid sofa.

Sean Brown makes incredibly cool stuff, and this sculptural plywood chair with a melamine finish is exactly that. Take a seat or just admire the hypnotic curves.

Even though I already have a pair of old and partially repaired Wishbone chairs, I recently discovered all the color variations that are possible, and I could definitely stand to have another one or two.

After reading this story about iconic dining chairs, I want Donald Judd’s 84 chair even more.

You’ll want to read all about the rise of the Plia chair on Clever tomorrow. This 1970s chrome and lucite beauty is a mainstay in a modern home.

I’m a big fan of Steven Bukowski's furniture and this chair is a perfect example of why. It’s bold, it’s classy, and not without a pop of something fun.
